So you're a family looking to take a nice, extended trip to Disney World, but you're not sure where to start. Or maybe you're just a Disney Parks newbie who wants to plan their dream vacation to the middle of Florida. Maybe you're an adult, looking to plan an adult's-only trip to Orlando! Well, that's where Trip Trend Setters comes in!
For today's post, let's chat about the perfect 5 day Disney World itinerary, starting with how to actually get to the fabled House of Mouse, before moving into your day-by-day plan. We'll also cover some things to know before you go from the expert herself, my wife, who may as well moonlight as one of those Mouse Planner travel agents.
So let's talk about your ideal 5 full days in Walt Disney World!
Booking Your 5 Day Disney World Trip
We have an entire blog post on the site dedicated to hacks and secrets to booking Disney park travel, so I won't go too into detail here. If you're interested in the lengthy version, you can check that out here. But let's cover the Cliff Notes version:
1. Credit cards are your friend. In addition to earning points and miles on your booking, you can also score some deals in credit card-specific travel portals. Walt Disney World hotels are now located in the Capital One, Citi and BILT travel portals, allowing you to either use points to book, or providing massive points multipliers (10x on the Capital One Venture X) on your bookings to make any future trips a little cheaper.
2. Don't forget about the Swan and Dolphin! The Swan, Swan Reserve and Dolphin hotels are all higher-end hotels located on Walt Disney World's campus, making them official Disney hotels. However, their secret is that they're also Marriott hotels, meaning you can use free nights, Marriott points and any upgrade certificates you've amassed to upgrade your experience, or reduce your total cost.
3. Reduce your costs with third parties: When it comes to planning a Disney trip, it would make sense to book everything through Disney, right? Well, yes, but there are also better, cheaper ways to do it through official third party vendors. For example, Undercover Tourist is an official Disney Parks ticket reseller who I have personally used and would recommend. You can save $5-$15 per ticket per day, which adds up quickly for a bg family! And if you're looking to book Disney's upper echelon of hotels, labelled "Deluxe," don't forget to check out a Disney Vacation Club points rental house first. David's Vacation Rental is the most popular, and this can literally save you thousands of dollars on a Deluxe room, which is a gamechanger for families.
Know Before You Go - Disney World Edition
Booking a Disney World trip is a ton of up-front work, which is why I generally leave it to my wife, the in-house expert. Here are her top tips for planning a successful Disney World vacation before you even get to the parks:
1. Plan your dining: If you're staying in a Disney World hotel (do it), then you get to book your dining 60 days out from your trip. Hop on this as soon as you can, as some of the more in-demand places sell out immediately, even for weekday bookings. You'd be surprised.
2. Lightning Lanes are changing: Lightning Lanes are the new Fastpass, introduced a few years ago as a paid add-on to juice more money out of the Park's division of Disney. They've been a smashing success, but have frequently been derided by Disney fans as frustrating to use due to having to book your entire day at 7am. Well, Disney has rolled out a new system for Lightning Lanes that will allow you to book your rides 7 days in advance! This is a blessing for those that hated waking up early, but a curse for parents who have yet another thing to plan on. It's also worth noting that Lightning Lanes are an added cost, and they are subject to surge pricing, so make sure that this cost doesn't make or break your trip!
3. Don't forget about airport transportation: I also covered this in our comprehensive guide, but MCO International Airport is about 40 minutes from Disney World. This means you need to plan accordingly. Are you renting a car and paying the daily parking fee at the resorts? Are you taking Uber, flexible but expensive? Are you taking Mears Connect, the cheap alternative to the extinct Magic Express? Don't forget to plan this in advance, especially if you have small children in town and need to plan on things like car seats!
4. Be aware of special events: If you're traveling during a season like Halloween or Christmas, some of the parks have after-hours events that require additional tickets. If you choose not to purchase tickets to these events, Disney will kick you out of the parks early, so be aware!
Alright, now that we've chatted about pre-booking, let's get into the parks themselves!
Day 1: Magic Kingdom
Morning Magic
Your magical 5-day Disney World vacation begins with the crown jewel of the Disney parks: Magic Kingdom. Start your day early to make the most of it, aiming to arrive at the park as it opens. If you're staying at a Disney Resort Hotel, take advantage of early park entry for resort guests so you can beat some of the lines before the park truly fills up.
The first stop on Main Street, USA, should be a classic Disney breakfast. A popular spot is the Main Street Bakery, where you can grab a coffee and a pastry to fuel up for the adventure ahead. Or, if you're my in-laws, you get a Starbucks as quickly as possible and walk quickly to your first attraction.
Must-See Attractions
The first order of business is probably riding your Lightning Lanes for some of the park’s most popular rides. Head straight to Adventureland and enjoy the famous Pirates of the Caribbean ride (and maybe some Dole Whip), then move on to Frontierland for the wild, wild west experience on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. As the morning progresses, make your way to Fantasyland. Fantasyland is home to several classic rides that you won't want to miss. Start with my least favorite ride in Disney World, "It's A Small World," a whimsical boat ride that takes you through different countries showcasing the unity of cultures around the world. Then, fly with Peter Pan on Peter Pan’s Flight, a fan favorite with often long lines, so a Lightning Lane reservation is a smart move here.
However, the biggest draw in this park for your Lightning Lane dollars is Tron Lightcycle Run. The newest ride in Disney World, this takes you on the fastest roller coaster in Magic Kingdom through one of the most famous scenes in sci-fi movie history, the lightcycle chase from both Tron movies. It's also got the best music of any ride in Walt Disney World, set to the wonderous Daft Punk.
Lunchtime Delights
By now, you'll probably be ready for lunch. There are many dining options in the Magic Kingdom, but for a truly magical experience, book a table service meal at Be Our Guest Restaurant. This immersive dining experience in Beast’s Castle offers French-inspired cuisine and the chance to dine in the grand ballroom or the mysterious West Wing. Barring that, you can use Mobile Order across the park to grab a quick bite and hop back into the action.
Afternoon Adventures
Post-lunch, venture to Liberty Square and board the Haunted Mansion. This iconic dark ride is a perfect blend of spooky and fun, featuring 999 happy haunts. From there, head to Tomorrowland. Don’t miss Space Mountain, a thrilling indoor roller coaster that takes you on an interstellar adventure.
If you have young kids, the afternoon is a good time to visit the character meet and greet spots, some of which you can book within Genie+. Meet some of your favorite Disney characters at Princess Fairytale Hall or in other designated areas around the park. This is also a great time to catch one of the many live performances or parades that happen throughout the day on Main Street, USA.
Evening Extravaganza
This is critical: line up earlier than you think for fireworks. You might see some people already staking claims outside the castle while it's still light out and think they're nuts. They are, but they also know what they're doing. Main Street, USA, provides a fantastic vantage point for the spectacular light show and fireworks. Before the show, grab a snack from one of the many vendors around the park – a Mickey-shaped pretzel or some popcorn will make the wait enjoyable.
If you don't need to see the fireworks, then this is the ideal opportunity to ride the more popular rides you may not have gotten to yet. While everyone else sees the show, you can hop across the park to grab rides with no lines!
Wrapping Up the Day
End your day with one of the park’s newer attractions: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. This family-friendly roller coaster in Fantasyland offers a smooth ride with some gentle thrills, making it a perfect way to cap off a long day of fun. If the line is too long, consider using the standby wait times app to find a shorter queue or come back just before the park closes when lines are typically shorter. If you're in line as the park closes, they will allow you to ride!
Insider Tips for Day 1
- Best Time to Visit Popular Rides: Use the My Disney Experience app to check standby wait times and optimize your ride schedule, but generally first thing in the morning is your ticket here.
- Dining Plan: If you have a Disney dining plan, plan your meals to ensure you get the most value.
- First Thing: Arrive early for rope drop to get a head start on the day’s attractions.
- Individual Lightning Lane: Reserve these for the most in-demand rides like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Space Mountain.
- Cast Member Advice: Don’t hesitate to ask a cast member for help or tips; their insights can enhance your visit.
Day 2: Epcot
Morning in Future World
On your second day of the Walt Disney World vacation, venture into the wonders of Epcot, my favorite of the four theme parks. Known for its blend of futuristic technology and cultural showcases, Epcot offers a unique Disney experience.
Arrive early to enjoy a full day, starting in Future World. Grab a quick breakfast at your Disney Resort Hotel or at Sunshine Seasons inside the park, offering a variety of fresh and tasty options.
Begin your exploration with Spaceship Earth, the iconic geodesic sphere that takes you on a journey through the history of human communication. It's a great way to set the stage for the day's adventures. Afterward, head to The Seas with Nemo & Friends. This pavilion offers a slow-moving ride perfect for small children, featuring characters from Finding Nemo, followed by exploring a massive aquarium filled with marine life.
Thrilling Rides and New Attractions
Next, make your way to Test Track. Here, you'll design your own virtual concept car and then test it on a high-speed outdoor track. It's one of the park's most thrilling rides, so securing a Lightning Lane reservation is highly recommended. However, this ride can also be a logistical nightmare as it's frequently broken. If you've already booked a Lightning Lane and the ride goes down, they will issue you a single-use pass to a different ride, but it's complicated to use so make sure you ask a cast member!
Another must-see attraction in Future World is the brand-new Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, my wife's new favorite ride in all of Walt Disney World. This innovative indoor roller coaster offers a thrilling ride with a story-driven experience featuring your favorite Guardians characters. However, there are two critical notes for this ride:
1. There are only two ways to access this ride: the Virtual Queue, which begins at 7am and again at 1pm where you have to register and they will call you back, or you have to pay $15 per person for the Single Lightning Lanes. You cannot just walk up to this ride and stand in line.
2. This ride has been known to induce motion sickness due to its unique ride track and vehicle which can spin 360 degrees. If you are prone to motion sickness, this ride might not be the one for you.
Finally, if you're traveling with a child in the park, they will likely want to head to "Frozen Ever After," the Frozen-themed ride located in World Showcase. The lines for this one are LONG, so plan plenty of time to ride. However, even as an adult with no ties to Frozen, I think the ride is pretty worth it.
Lunchtime in Future World
For lunch, head to one of Epcot’s quick-service restaurants. The Electric Umbrella offers American classics, or if you prefer something lighter, the Coral Reef Restaurant provides seafood dishes with a view of the aquarium. If you're lucky enough to be there during a food festival, visit booths across World Showcase to experience food from across the world!
World Showcase Adventure
Post-lunch, transition to the World Showcase. This part of the park features 11 pavilions, each representing a different country with unique architecture, food, and entertainment. Start in Mexico with a boat ride through a vibrant Mexican fiesta on the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros. While you're in the pavilion, make sure to grab a margarita.
As you move through the different countries, take the time to sample snacks and drinks from each. Enjoy a croissant in France, some sushi in Japan, or a cold beer in Germany. The World Showcase is a great place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, making it an important part of your Epcot experience. My personal favorites? For food, the India hut has excellent chicken tikka masala (not actually Indian, but we can let it slide). And then for a beer, head to the U.K and grab a Boddingtons overlooking the lake.
Cultural Immersion and Character Meet
Throughout the World Showcase, you'll find opportunities to meet characters in their native pavilions. Look out for Mulan in China, Belle in France, and Snow White in Germany. These character meets are typically less crowded than other areas of the park, providing a good time for photo opportunities.
Evening in the World Showcase
As evening approaches, choose a dining spot within the World Showcase for dinner. Le Cellier Steakhouse in Canada offers a luxurious dining experience, while the Biergarten Restaurant in Germany provides a fun, family-style meal with live entertainment.
Nighttime Spectacular
Finish your day with Epcot's nighttime spectacular, Epcot Forever. This light and fireworks show over the World Showcase Lagoon is a perfect end to your day. Make sure to find a good spot early, preferably near the edge of the lagoon, to get the best view of the show.
Insider Tips for Day 2
- Lightning Lanes: Prioritize securing passes for Frozen Ever After and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.
- Dining Reservations: Epcot’s table service restaurants are popular, so make reservations well in advance.
- Snack Around the World: Instead of a full lunch, consider sampling small dishes from various pavilions.
- Best Spot for Fireworks: Find a location near the front of the lagoon but away from large structures to avoid obstructed views.
- Cultural Shows: Don’t miss the live cultural performances in the pavilions, such as the drummers in Japan or the acrobats in China.
Day 3: Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Morning in Hollywood Studios
Exhausted yet? Well, here comes likely the most walking you'll do of your five days in the Disney parks! Day three of your Walt Disney World vacation takes you to the cinematic world of Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Arrive early to maximize your time in this popular park as this has the highest density of rides across the four parks. Start your day with a quick breakfast at the Trolley Car Café, which offers delicious pastries and Starbucks coffee, or hit the Joffrey's cart for some mediocre coffee.
Begin your adventure with some of the park’s most thrilling attractions. Head straight to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and immerse yourself in the world of Star Wars. The first ride to experience is Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. This interactive ride lets you pilot the famous spaceship on a smuggling mission. Make sure to secure a Lightning Lane reservation for this ride to avoid the long lines.
Exploring Galaxy’s Edge
After your mission on the Millennium Falcon, explore the rest of Galaxy’s Edge. Visit Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities for unique Star Wars souvenirs, or build your own lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop. The immersive environment, complete with roaming droids and stormtroopers, is an unforgettable experience for any Star Wars fan.
Next, brace yourself for the park’s most talked-about attraction: Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. This groundbreaking ride combines a trackless dark ride, a walk-through, and a motion simulator, providing an epic adventure in the Star Wars universe. Due to its immense popularity, securing an Individual Lightning Lane pass is highly recommended.
Lunchtime in Hollywood Studios
For lunch, head to Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo in Galaxy’s Edge. This quick-service restaurant offers unique and tasty dishes inspired by the Star Wars universe. Our favorites? The quinoa meatballs at this restaurant might be the best food you have at Disney World during your whole trip, complete with hummus and pita.
Afternoon Adventures
After lunch, make your way to Toy Story Land, another highlight of Hollywood Studios. Start with Slinky Dog Dash, a family-friendly roller coaster that offers fun twists and turns. Again, this one has one of the longest lines in any park, and the Lightning Lanes tend to sell out instantly. There is also no shade in line. Like, none. It will be extremely hot, so make sure you have water packed and ready.
Then, test your aim on Toy Story Mania!, a 4D shooting game that’s fun for all ages.If you have young kids, don’t miss Alien Swirling Saucers, a whimsical ride that spins you around in toy rocket ships. Toy Story Land is also a great place to meet characters like Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie.
Classic Hollywood Attractions
In the afternoon, explore some of Hollywood Studios' classic attractions. Experience the thrilling Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, a drop ride set in a haunted hotel and my wife's obsession. Then, take a spin on the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, a high-speed roller coaster with inversions and rock music. This one is my least favorite in the park simply due to the ride mechanics. I'm very tall, so the over-the-shoulder harness actually doesn't really fit me and causes a fair amount of pain. If you're someone that shops in the "big and tall" section of a store, this ride isn't for you.
Dinner and Evening Entertainment
For dinner, make a reservation at the Hollywood Brown Derby, a signature dining restaurant that offers a taste of old Hollywood glamour. The Cobb Salad and the Filet Mignon are popular choices, but I was told by a server here to avoid the vegetarian Shepard's Pie at all costs, so maybe take that advice with you.
As night falls, make sure to catch one of the park’s spectacular shows. Fantasmic! is a must-see nighttime show featuring Mickey Mouse as he battles Disney villains in a water and fireworks extravaganza. Alternatively, check out the newer Disney Movie Magic and Wonderful World of Animation projections on the Chinese Theatre, which celebrate Disney’s film legacy and is just...awesome.
Wrapping Up the Day
End your day with a stroll down Hollywood Boulevard. The atmosphere is magical at night with all the lights and the classic Hollywood feel. Stop by some of the shops for last-minute souvenirs or grab a treat at Hollywood Scoops for some ice cream.
Insider Tips for Day 3
- Lightning Lanes: Prioritize securing passes for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Slinky Dog Dash, and Rise of the Resistance.
- Best Time to Visit: Arrive early to Galaxy’s Edge and Toy Story Land to beat the crowds.
- Character Meet: Take advantage of the character meet and greets throughout the park, especially in Toy Story Land and near Echo Lake.
- Dining Plan: Utilize the dining plan for table service meals like Hollywood Brown Derby.
- Best Spot for Fantasmic!: Arrive early to secure good seats for Fantasmic!, or consider a dining package that includes reserved seating.
Day 4: Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Morning in Animal Kingdom
On the fourth day of your Disney World adventure, immerse yourself in the wonders of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the park least like any of the others. Arrive early to enjoy a full day of exploring exotic animals, thrilling rides, and breathtaking landscapes. Start your day with a quick breakfast at your Disney Resort Hotel or grab a pastry and coffee at Creature Comforts inside the park. Begin your adventure in Pandora – The World of Avatar.
Head straight to Avatar Flight of Passage, one of the park’s most popular rides. This exhilarating 3D flight simulator takes you on a breathtaking journey through the world of Pandora. Due to its popularity, securing a Lightning Lane reservation is essential to avoid long lines. The other strategy? Haul ass right when the park opens to be the first in line.
Exploring Pandora
After your flight, explore the rest of Pandora. Take a serene boat ride on Na'vi River Journey, where you’ll encounter the bioluminescent flora and fauna of Pandora. The visuals and sounds make this a calming and mesmerizing experience with a truly absurd animatronic at the end of the ride that you have to see to believe.
Discovering Africa
Next, make your way to Africa. The first stop should be Kilimanjaro Safaris, where you’ll embark on a guided tour through the African savanna. This ride offers close-up views of animals like elephants, lions, and giraffes in a habitat that mimics their natural environment. It’s an experience that’s both educational and thrilling. If you're into maximum animal activity, do this during the morning or evening when it's cool, or when it's raining!
After your safari, take some time to explore the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. This walking trail offers up-close views of gorillas, hippos, and exotic birds. It’s a great way to enjoy the park’s lush landscapes and learn more about the animals.
Lunchtime in Animal Kingdom
For lunch, head to Harambe Market, a bustling marketplace offering a variety of African-inspired dishes. Try the grilled chicken skewers or the beef and lamb gyros for a flavorful and satisfying meal. The other option? Head back to Pandora and hit the Sat'uli Canteen for one of the highest rated quick service meals on the property.
Afternoon Adventures
After lunch, head to Asia. Start with Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain. This thrilling roller coaster takes you on a high-speed journey through the Himalayas, complete with an encounter with the legendary Yeti. Secure a Lightning Lane reservation to minimize your wait time, but this one does tend to move pretty fast, and the queue is really unique if you have some time to kill.
Next, cool off on Kali River Rapids, a white-water rafting adventure through the jungles of Asia. Be prepared to get wet, as this ride is known for its splash-filled fun. Note that you will get wet, possibly soaked. If you didn't bring a change of clothes, or you don't mind walking around with wet socks, don't ride this one.
For a change of pace, visit the Maharajah Jungle Trek, a walking trail where you can see tigers, bats, and other exotic animals. The beautifully themed environment makes it a relaxing and visually stunning experience.
Evening in Animal Kingdom
As evening approaches, head to the worst part of the park, Dinoland U.S.A, and enjoy some classic amusement park fun. Ride the spinning Primeval Whirl or take a trip back in time on DINOSAUR, a thrilling dark ride that sends you on a mission to save a dinosaur from extinction. For dinner, make a reservation at Tiffins Restaurant, an upscale dining experience offering dishes inspired by the flavors of Africa, Asia, and South America. The atmosphere is elegant, and the menu features items like charred octopus, lamb chops, and South African wines.
Nighttime Spectacular
End your day with the stunning Rivers of Light nighttime show. This beautiful display of lights, water, and music celebrates the beauty of nature and the interconnectedness of all living things. Find a good spot early, as the show is popular and seating fills up quickly.
Insider Tips for Day 4
- Lightning Lanes: Prioritize securing passes for Avatar Flight of Passage, Expedition Everest, and Kilimanjaro Safaris.
- Best Time to Visit: Arrive early to Pandora and Africa to beat the crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures.
- Character Meet: Look out for character meet and greets in the park, such as Mickey and Minnie in their safari outfits at Adventurers Outpost.
- Animal Encounters: Take advantage of the walking trails like Gorilla Falls and Maharajah Jungle Trek for leisurely animal viewing.
- Dining Plan: Utilize the dining plan for table service meals like Tiffins Restaurant.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom offers a unique blend of thrilling rides, animal encounters, and immersive environments. Whether you're soaring over Pandora, exploring the African savanna, or enjoying the lush landscapes of Asia, this park provides a day full of adventure and wonder.
Day 5: Disney Springs and Other Activities
Morning at Disney Springs
Your final day at Walt Disney World is perfect for exploring Disney Springs, the vibrant shopping, dining, and entertainment district. Start your morning with a leisurely breakfast at Chef Art Smith's Homecomin', known for its Southern comfort food. Indulge in dishes like fried chicken and biscuits or the decadent French toast. Not my favorite, but it's popular.
If you do want a full list of the best restaurants in Disney Springs, we've got you covered.
After breakfast, take some time to stroll through the many shops. Disney Springs offers a mix of unique boutiques and popular brands. Visit World of Disney, the largest Disney character store in the world, for an extensive selection of Disney merchandise. For a more unique shopping experience, check out the eclectic goods at the Marketplace Co-Op.
Exploring Disney Springs
Disney Springs is not just about shopping; it’s also a hub for entertainment. If you're a fan of immersive experiences, try The Void, where you can step into a virtual reality Star Wars adventure. Alternatively, if you’re traveling with young kids, consider spending some time at the LEGO Store, which features impressive LEGO sculptures and a play area.Another highlight is the Coca-Cola Store, where you can sample different Coke products from around the world at the rooftop bar. This is a fun and refreshing break from shopping.
Lunchtime Delights
For lunch, head to The BOATHOUSE, which offers waterfront dining with a nautical theme. The menu features fresh seafood, steaks, and sandwiches. For a unique experience, consider a ride on an Amphicar, a vintage car that drives on both land and water, available for hire at The BOATHOUSE.
Afternoon Relaxation or Water Park Fun
After a fulfilling morning at Disney Springs, you have a couple of options for your afternoon. If you’re looking to relax, head back to your Disney Resort Hotel and enjoy some downtime by the pool. Many Disney resorts have themed pools, water slides, and poolside activities that are perfect for a relaxing afternoon.Alternatively, if you’re up for more adventure, visit one of Disney’s water parks: Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach. Typhoon Lagoon offers a tropical paradise with thrilling water slides, a giant wave pool, and a relaxing lazy river. Blizzard Beach, themed around a melting ski resort, features high-speed water slides, a family raft ride, and a dedicated area for younger kids. Both parks provide a great way to cool off and have fun.
Evening Entertainment at Disney Springs
Return to Disney Springs in the evening for dinner and entertainment. Make a reservation at Morimoto Asia, where you can enjoy a culinary journey through Asian flavors. The stunning interior and diverse menu, including sushi, Peking duck, and dim sum, make for a memorable dining experience.
Nighttime Activities
After dinner, enjoy the vibrant nightlife at Disney Springs. Catch a live performance at House of Blues, where you can listen to live music and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Alternatively, head to Splitsville Luxury Lanes for a fun night of bowling combined with great food and drinks. If you prefer a more relaxed evening, consider a movie at the AMC Dine-In Theatre, where you can watch the latest films in comfort while enjoying a meal and drinks delivered to your seat.
Insider Tips for Day 5
- Best Time to Shop: Visit Disney Springs in the morning or early afternoon to avoid the evening crowds.
- Dining Reservations: Popular restaurants like The BOATHOUSE and Morimoto Asia can fill up quickly, so make reservations in advance.
