Traveling has become an integral part of modern life, whether for business, leisure, or adventure. As technology advances, so does the array of travel tech gadgets that can enhance your journey, making it more convenient, enjoyable, and stress-free. In recent years, several game changing technology has dropped in the travel sector that make our lives easier on any kind of trip.
This comprehensive guide delves into the best travel accessories you need to include in your packing list for your next trip.
Essential Gadgets
Portable Charger
A portable charger is a travel essential, ensuring your devices never run out of battery power during your adventures. With the increasing reliance on smartphones, tablets, and other tech gadgets, a portable battery pack or power bank provides peace of mind, especially during long-haul flights or remote road trips. Look for a charger with multiple USB-C ports and ample battery capacity to get several full charges for your devices, which can lead to more hours of use for your other favorite travel tech.
My recommendation? The Charmast 10000 mAh Travel Essentials Battery. It has a convenient digital display indicating the charge of the power bank, as well as multiple built-in cables for charging devices from various brands, covering Apple and the various Android and Windows devices. Flexibility is key, and it doesn't get more flexible than this Charmast for me.
Travel Adapters
Staying connected during international travel requires a reliable travel adapter. The Epicka Universal Travel Adapter is a great option, featuring multiple USB ports and compatibility with outlets in over 150 countries. This small device pairs perfectly with your other tech gadgets, ensuring you can charge everything from your smartphone to your laptop, no matter where you are.
Noise-Canceling Headphones
As someone that takes 4-6 long-haul flights per year, I've really come to appreciate the world of noise cancellation. Noise-canceling headphones are a must-have for frequent travelers, especially when you're on the dreaded long-haul flight overnight where there are more likely to be screaming babies and restless children in the seat right behind you. They block out the distractions of a bustling airport or a noisy flight, allowing you to enjoy your music, movies, or simply some peace and quiet.
Wireless headphones with hours of battery life, such as those from Bose or Sony, offer great sound quality and comfort for long flight durations.
For the standard traveler, it's tough to beat the Apple Airpod Pros. They're tough, water resistant, durable, and small enough to chuck in your backpack without a second thought. I also use these to walk the dog, do dishes and go to the gym, so they're extremely multi-purpose. However, for those longer flights where you might want to opt for over-ear headphones, I recommend the Bose QC35's. They are on the pricier side of the commercial headphone scale, but they do the job extremely well, and the battery life is fantastic. I've had these for two years and used them on over 70 trips, and they still hold up.
Tracking Your Luggage
On a recent trip with my wife's family, I did something I never do: check a bag. Well, that came back to bite me when we landed in Norfolk, Virginia, and my bag didn't show up. After a few minutes of speaking to the lost bag attendant, I remembered that I'd put my Apple Airtag in the lining of the bag. This allowed us to find out exactly where in the airport my bag was, which was extremely helpful as it turns out it had just fallen off of a luggage cart somewhere in the underbelly of ORF Airport. The agent was also thankful for the tag, and told me and my in-laws "everyone should have this. Everyone. I recommend Airtags to every traveler I speak to."
That was good enough for them! My family rushed out and all bought Airtags for their luggage, and now you can grab one too. Use this link if you'd like to pick one up for yourself, and to support the site. I highly recommend it (and appreciate your support!).
Tech for Communication
Smartwatch
A smartwatch is not only a stylish accessory but also a functional travel companion. It provides easy access to notifications, fitness tracking, and even GPS navigation. For iPhone users, the Apple Watch is an excellent choice, while Android users might prefer options like the Samsung Galaxy Watch. These devices ensure you stay connected and on top of your schedule without constantly reaching for your phone.
For me, the winner here is the Apple Watch SE. It's the cheaper version of the watch, with very few frills. However, that's all I need it for! Notifications from Delta are a lifesaver on the watch, and have saved me several times when I've experienced a last-second gate change I have to sprint to on the other side of the airport.
Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot
Maintaining internet connectivity on the go is crucial, especially in a foreign country. A portable Wi-Fi hotspot allows you to access the internet without relying on public Wi-Fi networks, which can be unreliable and insecure. Devices like Skyroam or GlocalMe offer affordable prices and easy setup, making them the best travel gadgets for staying connected anywhere.
Translation Device
Breaking down language barriers is easier with a translation device. These gadgets can translate spoken words in real-time, making communication in a foreign country much simpler. The Pocketalk Translator, for instance, supports multiple languages and provides accurate translations, helping you navigate new places and converse with locals effortlessly.
Capture Memories
Action Camera
Now that everyone has a high-quality digital camera on their phones, is this absolutely necessary? No, not really. But documenting your travel experiences in high quality is possible with an action camera, especially depending on your destination. The new GoPro Hero series offers exceptional video and photo capabilities, making it perfect for capturing your adventures. These cameras are durable, waterproof, and equipped with advanced stabilization features, ensuring you get the best shots whether you’re hiking, diving, or exploring a bustling city.
Smartphone Gimbal
For those who prefer using their smartphones to capture memories, a smartphone gimbal is an excellent accessory. It stabilizes your videos, giving them a professional look. Brands like DJI offer compact and user-friendly gimbals that are easy to carry and use, making them a great addition to your travel tech arsenal.
Drone
A drone takes your travel photography and videography to new heights. Capture breathtaking aerial shots of landscapes, cityscapes, and other attractions with devices like the DJI Mavic Mini. These drones are portable, easy to fly, and equipped with high-resolution cameras, ensuring you get stunning footage of your travel destinations. ## Stay Organized
E-Reader
Carrying multiple books can add unnecessary weight to your luggage. An e-reader like the Kindle Paperwhite allows you to carry a library of books in one lightweight device. With long battery life and a glare-free screen, it’s perfect for reading during flights, at the beach, or in your hotel room.
Digital Luggage Scale
If you're anything like my wife and her family, then you pack everything in your closet for a trip, regardless of how long you're gone. Airlines are now looking to squeeze every dollar out of consumers, and baggage fees for overweight bags are a key driver. Avoid excess baggage fees by weighing your bags beforehand with a digital luggage scale. This small device is easy to use and ensures your luggage meets the airline’s weight requirements, saving you from unexpected costs and hassles at the airport.
Safety and Security
GPS Tracker
Keep tabs on your belongings or loved ones while traveling with a GPS tracker. Devices like Apple’s AirTag or Tile Pro are small and discreet, allowing you to track your items via your smartphone. This added layer of security provides peace of mind, especially when navigating crowded places like airports and train stations.
Portable Safe
Securing your valuables in your hotel room is essential for peace of mind. A portable safe can be easily packed in your luggage and used to store important documents, credit cards, and other valuables. Products like the SAFEGO Portable Safe offer robust security features, ensuring your items are protected.
RFID-Blocking Wallet
Protect your credit cards and personal information from theft with an RFID-blocking wallet. These wallets prevent unauthorized scans of your cards’ RFID chips, safeguarding your financial data. Brands like Secrid and Travelambo offer stylish and functional options for every traveler, but Hayvenhurst offers my favorite. It's a slim-style card holder and money clip that has built-in RFID tracking, and looks pretty sleek in a carbon fiber print. You can grab yours here.
Conclusion
Investing in the right tech gadgets can significantly enhance your travel experience. From ensuring you stay connected and organized to capturing memories and maintaining security, these devices provide convenience and peace of mind during your journeys. Whether you’re planning a business trip, a family vacation, or a solo adventure, these travel essentials will help you make the most of your travels in 2024. With the continuous advancements in technology, there’s no better time to upgrade your travel kit with these innovative gadgets. Safe travels!
